We Are Everywhere Youth Summit

WE ARE EVERYWHERE!

Welcome to the "We Are Everywhere" youth summit blog!  The Multicultural Arts School in Chicago invites you to share ideas and plans for transforming our world through self-determination, self-sufficiency, and artistic creativity...

On May 21st, youth, youth advocates, activists, and artists will converge to celebrate the social movements happening in our communities and around the world.  In the ongoing work to stop the violence in our neighborhoods, and disrupt capitalist and militarist control of our lives, we present this as a space for knowing one another and finding common ground in the work that we do...

PRESENTERS and PERFORMERS for the SUMMIT!!!

THE BRIGHTON PARK YOUTH COUNCIL

Where you have the power to change our community.

The Brighton Park Youth Council was created to provide a positive outlet for the youth of the community to express their concerns and take action to make their community better.  We believe by empowering our youth we are helping to create a stronger future for Brighton Park.

This interactive session will explore the use of dialogue and organization to discuss human trafficking prevention and immigrant populations where there are cultural taboos against speaking of sexuality in any form.  This session will consider the cultural norms that may help decrease barriers and improve the effectiveness of human trafficking prevention message within the community.

T.A.B.C.A.T. CAPOEIRA-Youth Leadership Initiative
Youth Teaching Culture and Arts to Reduce Violence

In this youth-led workshop participants will learn about communities that suffer a violence and poverty in Bahia, Brazil.  This example will lead to a comparative discussion focusing on the problems in their neighborhood.  It will illustrate how integration and culture can help reduce violence and gang activity in the community.  It will also educate the audience on how Afro-Brazilian history and philosophy help to raise consciousness in underdeveloped communities.

AREA Chicago

AREA will have a table displaying "Notes for a People's Atlas of Chicago" maps and a map making station.  AREA will also have some past issues of the publication.

GLOBAL EXPLORERS KIDS
A non-profit organization that teaches children about world cultures through the arts.  We are dedicated to providing children with the opportunity to explore the diversity of the world's peoples and helping them to understand and respect different cultures.  Our programs use the arts as a catalyst towards learning.

This spring, we will be collaborating with an organization out of Australia-Uthando Project-to help children in Chicago create handmade African dolls to send to children in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.  Children in KwaZulu Natal are growing up in poverty and, due to the high rate of AIDS, many children are growing up either without parents or as caregivers for their parents, Uthando Project is working with the children to develop the nurturing aspect of play to encourage children to "develop physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually in a more robust way."

Global Explorer Kids would like to present some of these projects; including the Chicago-Jamaica QUilt project they did last year.  A powerpoint presentation and/or display of these projects will share the logistics of how to make such collaborations happen.

STOCKYARD INSTITUTE-CAFETERIA SESSIONS

Collaboration with Vocalo and MAS students, organizing tree radio workshops at the school before the event, in order to do a live radio broadcast from the youth summit.

THE UNIVERSITY OF HIP-HOP

UHipHop is a multidicsciplinary school of the street arts with chapters at various centers and schools across Chicago.  The group was started by high school students and provides opportunities for young people to do community projects with their hip-hop skills and talents.

Teachers from UHip-Hop will be presenting several workshops: bboying/bgirling skills, how to do graffiti and develop a community graffiti project, and hip-hop history.  UHipHop will also have a live painting station at the summit!

LA VOZ DE LOS DE ABAJO AND RADIO POPULARES

Both groups are Chicago organizations that focus on people to people, community solidarity projects in Latin-America.  They will share their organizations' work in solidarity with social justice groups in Central and South America, focusing on projects involving mural arts and radio in campesino and indigenous communities and on the involvement of local artists and activists in the projects.  There will be multimedia presentations and a hands-on section of the workshop where the participants will set up a radio station and "broadcast".  The goal of the workshop is to stimulate discussion about solidarity and the creation of links with other communities struggling for social justice.

PRODUCCIONES EN EL OHO PRODUCTIONS

En el ojo is a small video and television production group that produces documentaries and shows focusing on political, social, and cultural issues important to the community.  The workshop will focus on the use of video and media to document the historical memory of our communities, even as the communities are making that history right now.  There will be a focus on visual literacy to discuss how images and technology are used in the mainstream media and how they can be used to tell our stories.  The workshop will include a major hands-on component using video equipment to record, using the conference as an example of the hip-hop community's historical memory and how and why to document it.
